Are Organic Foods Healthier?

Why do so many people talk so enthusiastically about organic foods? Are they really healthier than non-organic food?

Many adherents to organic foods answer that question with a resounding "Yes!" They say that the organic food has given them more energy, and they generally speaking feel more well than before they began to eat organically.

I just read an article - on http://www.givemeamotive.com - that gives some of the reasons why many gardeners have chosen to grow their fruits and vegetabl

You Can Grow Your Garden During the Winter

Hostas can grow with very little sunlight, they're versatile and they look beautiful. And that's of course just as important to a garden owner that wants his or her garden to look nice and inviting

Turned their front yard into a blooming garden

It's really amazing what you can do with the surplus places in your yard. I just read the really inspiring story, written by Leslie Kuss, about a couple that turned their front yard into a blooming garden with lots of vegetables. Some years ago John and Barbara Ashby decided to change this part of their site. They cut down two trees that stood in front of their house. Then they also dropped their lawn. After they had removed both the trees and their lawn they began to turn the front yard into a

Prune your onions

I just took part in an interesting discussion on one of the Garden Stew forums. One of the other gardeners there ask if she can top (trim) her onions. I made a little research, and apparently it is possible to prune the tops of the onions - and help the bulbs grow bigger. When you trim the tops you just grasp the leaves and cut them with a sharp scissor about four inches from the point where the onion enters the soil. Then you should just repeat this procedure regularly, in order to keep the lea

By using these drought resistant plants in her garden Jane both saves money and protects the environment. And even though the plants only use very little water, h

More slugs this year than last year

Following up on the post I wrote yesterday, on slugs and snails, I just read an article by Estelle Tran on The Pitt News. According to this article there are more leopard slugs this year than last year. And that's my personal impression. The reason that there more slugs this year, says Estelle, is that the huge amounts of snow that we got during the winter acted like a kind of isolating blanket. And this snow "blanket" kind of protected the slugs. I don't know if you've ever heard this, but in f

Have you ever heard about Guerilla Gardening?

Most people have not.
Guerrilla Gardening means that you grow your own vegetables and fruits wherever you possibly can, even the smallest spaces. According to some proponents of this kind of gardening, 30 square meters (app. 36 square yards) are enough to grow all the food one person can eat for a whole year.

Therefore Guerrilla Gardening has become very popular in many inner-cities. For example, I just discovered that app. 25% of the vegetables consumed in Singapore come from this kind of gardening.

Vertical Gardening

Have you ever considered Vertical Gardening?

The benefits of Vertical Gardening are many. Let me mention just a few:

  • It's much easier to cultivate the plants in your garden.
  • It's much easier to water everything.
  • It's easier to harvest the vegetables etc. that you grow in your garden.
  • Your "garden" takes up much less space. Thus you can have more plants in your garden.
  • The plants are easier to view and enjoy.
  • Your plants don't get as many diseases because they're not in direct contact with the soil.
There are even more benefits. But I think you get the point: There are many benefits of using Vertical Gardening.

Gardening in colder climates

Do you live in a cold climate and have eagerly been waiting for summer to come?

Then it's easy to become so impatient when summer arrives that you rush planting new plants in your garden.

But be careful. You know, the earth in your garden may still not be quite ready for the new plants.

Consider warming up the earth with dark plastic or heat cables, or by covering the plants with plastic jugs that work like solar caps.

I just read an interesting article on how to prepare the earth in colder climates: http://gardeningchannel.com/planting-and-gardening-zones/
